EVO 9 Intercooler Upgrade 2/1/2012

In our persuit of more power and torque out of the Mitsubishi evolution, we decided to upgrade the stock unit which was a little banged up. The stock Evo 9 intercooler is a tube and fin design which has some benefits. There are arguments that the tube/fin design allows for more dissipation of heat, but at the expense of flow. We decided to go with a bar and plate intercooler to allow for better flow, and perhaps a little better throttle response.

The intercooler came with no hoses, clamps, or brackets, so we had to improvise a little with a ton of savings. We picked ours from ebay after some hours of research. A few things we had to mod were the grill and the hoses. The intercooler hoses didn't quite line up, so we modded our intercooler hose. We ended up cutting up some coolant hoses from a truck along with the stock hoses. The brackets were not too hard, but we had to figure exactly how the intercooler would bolt on. We ended up with three brackets holding the intercooler on. Two on each back side of the intercooler, and one on top-the top bracket was painted black.

As we mentioned above, the grill had to be ground down, along with the two studs on each side of it. The grill still has the center stud, and is enough to keep the grill in place. Grinding the grill, and removing the studs on each side of the grill allowed the grill and front spoiler to slide over the very large bar and plate a2a intercooler.

Once we got the intercooler in place, we took the EVO out for some runs, and it held pressure very well-now we need to take it to the dyno and install another map using the cobb tuner.
