MR2 COP Conversion 10/29/2011

Back in january of 2011 we had a famous tuner by the name of "noshoes" tune our car.   Bryan "NoShoes" Moore is a world known MR2 traveling tuner/mechanic, and has tuned MR2s to consistently high reliable power levels.  After we finished the caldina manifold project, we had noshoes come down to tune the widebody, and boy he did not dissapoint!  He was able to tune the Greddy TD06, HKS camed,  2.0 liter combo to 387whp and 317 lbs of torque!

If you are interested in acquiring his talents, he has a site were you can reach him: Noshoesspeedworks

Once we were done celebrating, a new thought was hatched for the widebody MR2, and it was to install a COP system.  COP stands for Coil On Plug, and many of today's cars and trucks run them.  Basically you have all the action(spark) happening on the top of each spark plug.  Instead of having a central coil, distributor, and sparkplug wires, you have all this wrapped into individual coils that sit right on top of each spark plug.

What are the benefits of this you ask. Well for one, you don't have to replace the sparkplug wires, cap, and rotor any longer! The second benefit is that you can run a wider spark plug gap, thus increasing fuel efficiency.

After some research, we found that the toyota carolla 1zz coils would work great for moderatelly powered MR2.  The 1zz coils have been able to provide spark into vehicles with more than 700 horsepower.  Toyota Carolla 1zz CoilsThe only thing that makes the install somewhat of an issue is that the coils don't fit snuggly into the 2.0 liter turbo motor sparkplug well.

There are some options.  Cut the old rubber bases from your old sparkplug wire sets, and place them around the coil plug,  put some kind of bolts on the cover to hold down the 1zz coils, or buy a pre-made kit.

If you want the easy route, you can get a kit from racerxfabrication.  They are a very talented fabrication shop, and have developed many great products for the MR2 community.

In any case, if you want something that can handle over 700 whp, then look no further than the 1zz coil.--we know that they'll be more than enough for us!
